Delta Dental debuts at the American Indian Science & Engineering Society (AISES) National Conference
Delta Dental made its first appearance at the American Indian Science & Engineering Society (AISES) National Conference held in Palm Springs, California, from October 6-8 to elevate the importance of oral health in overall health and encourage Native students to explore careers in dentistry and oral hygiene.
A snapshot of the AISES National Conference
Founded in 1977, AISES is a national nonprofit organization focused on increasing the representation of Indigenous peoples of North America and the Pacific Islands in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) studies and careers.
The conference, now in its 45th year, has become the premier event for Indigenous STEM professionals and students and provides access to career pathways, professional and leadership development, research, and networking that meaningfully incorporates Indigenous culture.
More than 2,700 high school, college, graduate, and post graduate students, tribal leaders, tribal members, government agencies, and conference sponsors attended the signature event this year — the largest to date.
Underscoring the importance of oral health in overall health and inspiring career exploration
Delta Dental exhibited at the AISES College and Career Fair — the largest in the U.S. for Indigenous students and professionals — and engaged with students to discuss the importance of oral health as well as the oral health professional’s role in overall community health. Dental professionals from across the Delta Dental system were present to talk about oral health education and to answer questions about careers in dentistry and oral hygiene.
“We were thrilled to have Delta Dental attend the AISES National Conference as our first partner focused on oral health,” said Candace McDonough, Senior Development Officer for AISES. “Dentistry is a meaningful profession that supports the overall health of our communities, and we are grateful for our partnership with Delta Dental to further advance the AISES mission.”
Dr. Teri Barichello, Vice President and Chief Dental Officer, Delta Dental of Oregon, delivered a presentation entitled, “Creating pathways for more Native American representation in the oral health professional workforce and increasing oral health literacy to improve the overall health of our communities” and led a discussion during a breakout group in the health care track.
“There are tremendous inequities in oral health and overall health in Native communities, and long-term solutions that permanently address this issue are urgently needed,” said Dr. Barichello. “I was honored to speak at the AISES National Conference to discuss this important topic, which is key to creating a healthier future, and was inspired by my conversations with Native students and STEM professionals.”
Delta Dental was honored to attend and extends its deepest gratitude to the incredible AISES community for allowing us to be a part of this successful conference.
